North Eastern Thailand (known as simply Issan) is an area famed for its "real" Thai hospitality and culture. The culture in Issan is very strong and if you are seeking old world Thai hospitality then this area is a must. Some of the main provinces include Udon Thani, Roi Et, Khon Kaen and Nong Khai. Issan is the gateway to Laos and contains some of the best examples of Khmer temples in the kingdom. To the Northern tip is the mighty Mae Khong River and border crossings to the Peoples Republic of Laos.
The history of this area includes an R & R base for the soldiers during the Vietnam war and is also the base of Voice of America (VOA) a radio station which is still in operation today. Thailand's famous Tuk Tuk's are manufactured in this region.
The climate is also very different to that of Thailand's capital, Bangkok, offering cooler temperatures of around 14 C from November to March but quite hot from April to October.
This area is full of history, culture and landmarks including some of Thailand's most famous and unspoilt national parks. As the least visited region in the country the area is unique in a blend of Kymer, Lao and Thai cultures combined.
