Thailand Travel Guides ›› Chiang Rai Hilltribes

Chiang Rai province is the home of the several different hilltribes; the long-established Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Hmong, Mien and Akha, who all have their own customs, language, culture and art forms. They share animist beliefs and honour guardian spirits.

Many of the hilltribe women are accomplished in weaving and embroidery, decorating items with their own unusual patterns. Tourism has encouraged these traditional arts and crafts, with purses, bags, and small items produced for visitors. Silver bracelets, necklaces, belts and pendants are also popular. The hilltribes live in villages around the mountains and treks can be arranged to stay at the villages to learn about their culture and the landscape around the area.

Many of the hill-tribe villages close to Chiang Rai are now on the regular tourist trail but still remain interesting. If your time is too limited to trek to villages less visited and further out, you can take a day tour. These can be arranged by local travel agencies. Groups are kept small and prices based on a minimum of two-person minimum. The price decreases slightly with increased numbers.
