Kalasin Temples

Amphoe Muang
Wat Klang
This monastery is situated in Amphoe Munag housing a Buddha image named Ong Dam which is cast of bronze having the lap width of 20 inches. It has beautiful Buddhist characteristics, and believed to be cast in the period of Phra Chao Khu Na Kham. Phra Chaiyasunthon (King) brought to be enshrined as an auspicious object of the town. It is regarded a sacred Buddha image and whenever there is a drought the people of Kalasin will invite him to lead a procession begging for rain. There are ancient Thai alphabets inscribed at the base of the platform.

Phu Po Buddhistic Sigificance
This spot is located in Tambon Phu Po, Amphoe Muang Kalasin, approximately 28 kilometers north of Kalasin township area along Highway No. 2319. It houses two ancient Reclining Buddha images, one located at the entrance on the foot hill and another located on Phu Po. The two Reclining Buddha were carved on the cliffs by Dvaravati artisans. People of Kalasin and neighboring provinces highly pay their homage to these two images. Besides the image on top of Phu. Po, such area also has beautiful scenery which is suitable for relaxation. The local people celebrate the Reclining Buddha images in April of every year.

Besides Ong Dam Buddha Image, there is also a replica of Buddha Foot Prints, having the width of 50 centimeters and the length of 2 meters, in Wat Klang. The Foot Prints are made of sand stone and it is presumed that it was made in the period when this area was ruled by the Lawa tribe. The Foot Prints should originally be located on the bank of Lam Pao River near Sam Rong Rapid and it was celebrated every year until the bank denudation, occurred during the flood season of every year, caused the fear of damage to be happened to the foot prints. The people, then, moved the foot prints to be housed with Ong Dam Buddha image in the main shrine hall.

Wat Si Bunruang (Wat Nua)
This is an ancient monastery in the vicinity of Muang Kalasin Municipality. The main shrine hall of this monastery is surrounded by a number of beautiful sema stones from Muang Fa Daet Song Yang. The outstanding one among those beautiful sema stones is the one featuring divines traveling in the air above the castle which is featured in two tiered crystal niches (Dhanaravadistyle of art.) and there are features of a king, a queen and the prince son at the lowest part.

Kamalasai
Muang Fa Daet Song Yang
The town as currently seen the remains of brick and earth of doubled city moats and Phrathat Yakhu is located in the vicinity of Amphoe Kamalasai. The City plan is of an oval shape of Dvaravati style but having doubled township areas which is believed that the expansion of its township area was the cause. Farmers in the area always found sema stones with designs and without designs, made of sand stone, during their farm work. The number which has been registered at the Department of Fine Arts is 130 slabs. Other items found in the area are baked clay Buddha images showing the influence of the late Kupta craftsmanship, aging 1,000-2,000 years, baked clay smoking pipes having the designs of Amaravati period, i.e., curling stems making the shape of dragon, aging 7,000 years. The outstanding item is the same type of smoking pipe but made of bronze, aging 5,000-6,000 years. This is a confirmation that the metal age of Suwannaphum was started before every source in the world.
Muang Fa Daet Song Yang is, then, an ancient town having the age between A.D.757 - A.D.1057 and is now located at Ban Sema, Tambon Nong Paen, approximately 19 kilometers from the province township along Highway No. 214 (Kalasin-Roi Et) where a right turn is to be made, after traveling off the first 13 kilometers, at the Kamalasai School intersection, Amphoe Kamalasai for another 6 kilometers distance along the late rite road. It is regarded an important place for archaeological education of the province.

Phrathat Yakhu
It is located in the rice field north of Ban Sema. Amphoe Kamalasai, about 19 kilometers from the province township. The construction is of Dvaravati arts and the constructional materials are brick and earth having an octagon shape at the base.
The dimensions of the base is 10 meters is width and 10 meters in length and is built on top of one another in the design of four-gabled roofing totaling the height, from the base to the peak, of eight meters. It is believed that the Phrathat houses ashes and relics of high ranking monks who were respected by the people in that area. This can be noticed from destructions caused by war, i.e., when Muang Chiang Som won a war, Muang Fa Daet was destroyed almost every thing but Phrathat Yakhu. This causing the Phrathat had been deserted in the rather perfect conditioned remains and was renovated later. The villagers arrange to have an annual festival during April to May having the purpose of rain begging.

Wat Pho Chai Semaram
Another name of this monastery is Wat Ban Kom which is located in the vicinity of Muang Fa Daet Song Yang and not far from Phrathat Yakhu. It is an ancient monastery having sema stones made in Dvaravati period as interesting objects. Most of sema stones are fixed in the ground as the wall line while some of them are stored inside and on those sema slabs there are various features concerning Buddhism are carved.

Sahassakhan and Kham Muong
Phu Sing Buddhistic Significance
It is located on to of Phu Sing Hill, 34 kilometers north of Kalasin township along Highway No. 227. There are two ways to reach the top: using a curvy asphalt road on the west shelf of the hill: or using 104-step foot path on the east side. It is a peaceful relaxing spot surrounded by beautiful sceneries of rice fields, villages and the reservoir of Lam Pao Dam. Phu Sing Buddhistic Significance houses a fine and graceful Buddha image being in the attitude of subduing evil named Phra Phrom Phumipalo having the lap width of 10.5 meters.

Wat Sakkawan at the foot of Kum Khao Mount, on Highway 227, is a place where numerous dinosaur fossils from the late Jurassic period have been found. Some of the fossils have been dug up and are on display while others remain in the earth.
