Chao Phao Bay
Chao Phao Bay is one of the reasons the west became so popular in the early days due to its beautiful sunset views and softly curved bay that is the image of paradise.
Here the coast forms into idyllic coves that are flanked by huge rounded volcanic rocky points. The sand is golden white and fine and the sea shelf is steeper before the reef, thus it is possible to swim all year, whatever the tidal conditions.
The reef is about 100 metres from the beach and once crossed the rich coral and vibrant sea life are an attraction for many divers and snorkellers.
The pace of development has been slow and tasteful on Chao Phao, and it retains the peaceful beauty and laid back vibe that drew the first island explorers here, then made them return year after year.
Chao Phao is over half a kilometre long and has a good vibe with a several bars, including the acclaimed village Green with hearty portions of tasty European and Thai food, cool tunes and an upstairs bar with sunset views. If you?re looking for things to do and see around Chao Phao, the west coast of Koh Pha Ngan has something for everyone.
The rich coral reef that surrounds the south and west coast of the island is a haven for marine life and the stretch that runs from Chao Phao up to Koh Ma is considered the best on Koh Pha Ngan, making the region a hotspot for divers and snorkeling enthusiasts alike.
Nearby Koh Ma is a small island just off the north-west coast of Koh Pha Ngan with a sandbar that links the two islands and is the only National Marine Park within Pha Ngan?s waters. Here it possible to spot turtles, harmless reef sharks and swim amongst shoals of colorful tropical fish.
Boat trips are a popular way to explore the coast and even venture over to Angthong National Marine Park; with over 40 islands, a giant lagoon and impressive limestone caverns.
The region is fairly mountainous away from the coast, and there are a number of mountain trails and walks to follow; and with the large concentration of beaches in the west, it is possible to beach hop up and down the coastline. Wang Sai waterfall is within easy reach and Laem Son is a popular freshwater lake, shaded by tall pine trees with giant rope swings!
